Google releases Gemini 4 Argon, its newest AI, to paying users first
Google says its new AI matches the best from rivals. Pro and Ultra subscribers get it today, while free users have no date.
Google says Gemini 4 Argon beats rival AI models on tests of coding, security, science, finance and law. Those rivals include OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra and Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5, The Verge reports. Google also says Argon ranks first on the Vals Index. That index scores AI on work like finance, coding, legal and tax.
Pro and Ultra subscribers get Argon in the Gemini app and in Google's AI Mode in Search. Ultra subscribers also get it in Antigravity, Google's coding tool. The Verge says it is unclear when, or if, Plus or free users will get it.
Developers pay $2 per million pieces of text going in and $10 per million coming out. The Verge says that is about a fifth of what OpenAI and Anthropic charge. The price doubles at the end of November. Models also use different amounts of text for the same job, so real bills may not be lower.
Google also says Argon scores 87% on a test of physical puzzles in 3D. It says that is ahead of every other top model.
In my opinion, this matters most to developers and people who already pay for Gemini. If you have Pro or Ultra, you can try it today and compare it with the AI you use now. On the free plan, nothing changes for you yet.
